The Everest Base Camp trek climbs through Nepal's Khumbu region over roughly 12–16 days (13–14 is the most common itinerary), starting with a short, famously dramatic flight from Kathmandu into Lukla. From there the trail climbs gradually through Sherpa villages — Namche Bazaar and Tengboche among them — to let trekkers acclimatize before reaching Base Camp itself at 5,364m, beside the Khumbu Icefall.
Most people add a dawn climb of Kala Patthar (5,555m) the next morning for the best direct view of Everest's summit — Base Camp itself doesn't actually see the peak. March–May and September–November are the two dry, clear windows most itineraries are built around.
What to do there
- The Lukla flight — one of the most scenic (and famous) short mountain flights anywhere
- Namche Bazaar, the Khumbu's main Sherpa trading town, and Tengboche Monastery
- Kala Patthar (5,555m) at dawn, for the classic sunrise view of Everest itself
- Everest Base Camp, 5,364m, beside the Khumbu Icefall
