Cairns is the main gateway to the Great Barrier Reef — day trips out to the reef for snorkeling and diving run constantly, alongside helmet-diving tours that let non-divers walk the ocean floor under an air-fed helmet. The city backs directly onto Queensland's Wet Tropics rainforest too, reachable via the Kuranda Scenic Railway through mountain gorges and waterfalls.
June–October is the dry season and the clear favorite: warm, sunny, low-humidity days (roughly 17–28°C) with excellent water visibility for snorkeling and diving. April, May and October specifically combine that good weather with fewer crowds and better prices than the June–August peak.
